What is Spaghnum Moss? Spaghnum moss, better known in the Netherlands as peat moss, is a spore plant. This is one of the oldest land plants in the world. There are about 380 known species. ​ Spaghnum arises because the bottom of the plant dies and the top continues to grow. This creates a thick layer of many meters of dead plant material that acts like a sponge. Depending on the species, it can absorb 16 to 26 times its own weight in moisture. ​ Spaghnum naturally has a sterile effect. This prevents the cuttings from rotting. The excellent capillary action ensures that the moisture balance is in balance throughout the medium. Spagnum is low in nutrients and slightly acidic. This is a great advantage for epiphytes such as Hoya and Aeschynanthus. When should my cutting have water? You can easily recognize when it needs water again from the color and weight of the spaghnum moss. As it dries, it takes on an increasingly lighter color and weighs almost nothing. Never let the spaghnum dry out completely, but always keep it moist. depending on where the cutting is placed, it may be necessary to water again after a few days. Keep a close eye on this. One separate cutting in a pot needs water more often than several together. Do you notice that the cutting needs water too often, do you find it difficult to water on a regular basis, or do you often give your plants too much water? Then the options below are the best option for you Hydroponia Most of the cuttings supplied by Plant & Interieur are immediately ready to have a hydroponic existence. Because the cuttings are grown in spaghnum moss, the roots are used to a moist substrate. The best thing is to carefully remove the cotton bag and place the cutting with moss and all in a transparent glass or vase. You can leave a layer of water of about 1 cm at the bottom. Refill it when you see it's gone. Examples and instructions will later be found under the 'Inspiration' page. Mini ecosystem Placing the cuttings in a mini ecosystem creates their own micro-climate, so you hardly have to worry about it anymore. It may be longer than 1 year before it is necessary to water again. This is the most maintenance-friendly way. Over time, it is of course possible that the cuttings become too large and you will have to trim them and remove dead plant material. Examples and instructions will later be found under the 'Inspiration' page. Repot Larger pot means more soil/spaghnum. This retains more moisture, so you will have to water less often. More information can be found under the question ''When is the best time to repot my cutting?'' When is the best time to repot my cutting? Repotting is not immediately necessary for most cuttings that Plant & Interieur offers in the webshop. You can easily recognize this by the roots. If they have not yet grown out of the bag, repotting is not yet necessary. However, do you find yourself having to water the spaghnum too often? Then repotting is one of the options to prevent this. ​ Cuttings from the Gesneriacae family: aeschynanthus, nematanthus , columnea etc. and Apocynaceae: hoya, dischidia, ceropegia like to be root bound in a much too small pot. For these plant families, wait even longer before repotting. ​ Which soil can I use best for my cutting? One plant is slightly more critical than the other. In general, standard potting soil is fine. Many plants prefer well-drained soil. It is wise to make this airy with, for example, perlite/pebbles/hydro grains, etc. If you do not have this available, be extra careful with watering. The soil retains the water much longer. Cuttings from the family Gesneriacae & Apocynaceae are mostly epiphytic. These like to be taut with the roots in the pot. Always use an airy soil mixture here to prevent root rot. Do I have to remove the ''tea bag''? No, this is not necessary. The bag that holds the spaghnum around the roots is made of a wafer-thin layer of ''non-woven'' cotton. Over time, the bag will compost into the soil. The roots of the cutting therefore have no problem growing through it. If the roots of the cutting received have already grown through the bag, it is better to leave them in place. Removing it would only damage the roots unnecessarily. If the roots have not yet grown through the bag, you could choose to carefully cut them off. You can also tear the pouch open at the seam. You will notice that there are some loose tufts of moss in between. You can remove these. If the roots are stuck in the spaghnum, leave it in place and put the cutting with the remaining spaghnum in the ground. What is the best location for my cutting? Place the cuttings in a light position near the window during the winter months. Direct sunlight is still possible during these months (October to March). During the summer months you have to be careful of direct sunlight. Most tropical plants like a lot of indirect sunlight. A window facing north, east or west is fine. A south-facing window is also possible. Then place the cuttings a few meters from the window, so that they only receive indirect sunlight. ​ How do I ensure a full plant? You can create a full plant by cuttings or topping. If the cutting has already been topped, or if it has been cut from one leaf pair, it is often not convenient to immediately remove the top of the plant. Wait a few months for the plant to develop further. If you can cut a top of about 5 cm, this will give you a new cutting that you can stick next to it. This immediately makes the plant fuller. You can also grow the cutting separately. Nice as a cutting to exchange or to give to someone as a gift. The cutting you just topped looks a bit less attractive at first. However, you will often see several new shoots emerge after a few weeks. Topping promotes flowering of plants and you can adjust the model of the plant. Note: Hoyas bloom in the same place. Don't cut this ''peduncle'' away. Topping is especially recommended for cuttings from the family Gesneriaceae The topped cutting on the right side of the photo has made several side shoots, making it a nice full plant.
