Dischidia ovata, commonly known as "Watermelon Dischidia" due to the distinctive venation on its leaves resembling a watermelon rind, is a popular and charming epiphytic plant.
Dischidia ovata is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Australia. Its primary native range includes:New Guinea, Cape York Peninsula, Australia (Northern Queensland)
Some sources also mention its presence in other parts of Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, the Philippines, and parts of Indonesia (Java, Sumatra).
In its natural habitat, Dischidia ovata typically grows as an epiphyte (clinging to trees) or occasionally as a lithophyte (growing on rocks) in humid, wet tropical biomes. This includes environments like lowland forests, swamp forests, open forests, monsoon forests, and rainforests. It thrives in shaded to semi-shaded conditions, receiving filtered light under the forest canopy.
