This subspecies was formally described by Rodda & K. Armstr. and first published in Brittonia in 2019. The name "angustifolia" refers to its narrow leaves, which is a key distinguishing feature.

Its native range is primarily Myanmar, although the broader Hoya pandurata species itself is found in China (S. Yunnan) to Indo-China (including Laos and Vietnam). Hoya pandurata subsp. angustifolia specifically thrives in wet tropical biomes.
