The name "ignorata" itself, meaning "ignored" or "overlooked," aptly describes its history. Despite its widespread presence, it was botanically overlooked for a significant period. It was formally described and published in 2011 by T.B. Tran, M. Rodda, N. Simonsson, and J.K. Lee. The species epithet reflects the fact that it was "ignored" for so long, often confused with other plants or simply not recognized as a Hoya due to its inconspicuous nature in its natural habitat.
